Tim Tebow Superbowl Ad

Super Bowl commercials are always among the highlights of the CBS Super Bowl telecast, and the Sunday, February 7 broadcast of Super Bowl XLIV should be no exception. However, among the entertaining commercial offerings (which will surely include some by payday loan companies), there may be a Tim Tebow Superbowl ad that has pro-choice groups quite upset.
Who is Tim Tebow?

Tim Tebow is the second coming, if you believe Florida Gators football fans. He’s a former Heisman Trophy winning quarterback (2007) who led his team to three bowl victories during his college career. He’s been labeled a “can’t miss” prospect for the 2010 NFL Draft. He is also a devout Christian who is popular with the ladies. It is his faith that prompted him to team with the activist group Focus on the Family for a commercial entitled “Celebrate Family, Celebrate Life.”

That sounds well and good, but the 30-second ad has upset pro-choice groups like the Women’s Media Center with its upfront pro-life stance in the very public forum of national television. In a letter from the group, they made their view of CBS quite clear:

“By offering one of the most coveted advertising spots of the year to an anti-equality, anti-choice, homophobic organization, CBS is aligning itself with a political stance that will damage its reputation, alienate viewers, and discourage consumers from supporting its shows and advertisers.”

Morgan Harrington Body Found

A press conference was held after skeletal remains were found in the Anchorage Farm of David Bass, leading to suspicion that is could well be the body of missing Virginia Tech student Morgan Harrington.

During the the conference the assembled crowd was told by Colonel Steven Flaherty, the superintendent of the Virginia State Police, that, “based on evidence… we’re fairly confident that the remains are those of Morgan Dana Harrington.”

The remains that were found were soon moved to the Chief Medical Examiner in Richmond from the farm in Anchorage.

Flaherty also added that they, “cannot release the evidence that leads us to this conclusion at this particular time.”

Although owner of the farm Bass had told C-Vile that “there were some clothes” found near the remains.

Harrington who went missing from a rock concert, was last seen in a black Pantera t-shirt, black mini skirt, black tights and black knee high boots, as well as a Swarovski necklace.

Bass also spoke about the discovery as he was checking the fences in the morning in a location he arrived at with his tractor, ” I saw what looked like a dead deer. When i got a little closer, it didn’t look like a deer skull.”

Bass who has owned the farm since 1985, also stated that there was no real history of trespassing on his property. And he had no idea how the body could of gotten there, as the location where it was found is not accessible by car.

Stafon Johnson Rushed to Hospital

According to the Los Angeles Times, Stafon Johnson who is a USC running back, injured himself in the weight room today,in what appears to have been a freak accident. They report that he was lifting weights this morning,then lost control of the bar,which then landed on his neck.

He started spitting up blood,and was then taken by ambulance to the hospital. He is reportedly undergoing surgery.

Chris Carlisle,who is the strength coach over at USC said that this was something he had never seen in all of his 25 years of coaching. He stated, “I’ve seen players have the bar slip and fall onto their chest, but never in my 25 years of coaching have I heard of someone dropping a bar on their throat.”

They report that Chris Carlisle was within a few feet of Stafon when the incident occurred,and that there was an assistant strength and conditioning coach acting as the “spotter” for him.

Coach Pete Carroll said that this was an unfortunate accident, and stated that, “our thoughts and prayers are with Stafon.”

Stafon Johnson is currently leading the USC with five touchdowns this year. He is also the team’s 2nd leading rusher with 157 yards in 32 carries.

Little League World Series 2009

16 teams have made it to the Little League World Series in Williamsport. There are 8 U.S. teams and 8 International with the more prominent players like - 8 from the US and 8 international teams, with 13 year old Kiko Garcia from Chula Vista, California pulling ahead as an emerging star with the most impressive stats so far.
The 29th annual Junior League World Series is down to the final four.
Teams of 13- and 14-year-old baseball players from Puerto Rico and Aruba will play for the International championship at 5 p.m. Friday, August 21 at Taylor’s Heritage Park.

ESPN and ABC will be broadcasting the LLWS this year. The games will be in High Definition this year. The Final will be broadcast on ABC at 3:00 on August 30.
To me it seems like every year the kids act more unnatural because they are on TV

As part of my series on Chicago food history I hope to change the mindset people have of history. Rick Bayless is extremely popular today and relatively new in terms of being part of Chicago’s food culture, but I don’t believe there is a deadline to follow in which someone can be celebrated as part of history. Who wants to watch only the local NFL Game? In the U.S. you can only watch all the NFL games if you get DirecTV. The package costs almost $300 so not everyone wants to shell out that money. There is an alternative if you’re sick and tired of watching only the local games…

There are a few different places you can go to get listings of all the football games on the internet that you can watch for free. The most comprehensive and best place that I have found is HowToWatchFootball.com. The site is updated daily, usually in the morning but at the very least it is updated 1 hour before kickoff. The site provides links to the NFL games and college football and offers more links then the other two sites I’ll mention below so it is my personal favorite. They only keep the listings up for the current day so on a slow football day (like a Thursday night) they only will have the 1 or 2 games that are playing listed so the site looks a little empty. But don’t let this fool you, on Saturday and Sunday the site will be packed with many many listings.

Connor Cruise has signed on to star in a remake of the 1984 action war drama Red Dawn, Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman's son Connor is set to follow in the footsteps of his action hero father - he has landed a role in a big budget remake of Red Dawn.

Also joining the 14-year-old Cruise as soldier-fighting Wolverines in the remake are Isabel Lucas, Josh Hutcherson and Edwin Hodge.

Cruise — who made his big screen debut in 2008 as the young Will Smith in “Seven Pounds” — will play Daryl, the son of the town’s mayor.

iron girl triathlon 2009

For two local women, this weekend's Iron Girl triathlon is more than just a grueling day of swimming, biking and running. It's also as a stabilizing force in their lives in terms of health and spirit.

The AFLAC Iron Girl Syracuse Women's Triathlon, which will take place Sunday just outside of Syracuse, will proceed the Children's Oncology Group in its fight against childhood cancer.

Tamara Miller, 51, of Greenfield Center and Sheri Monroe, 33, of Clifton Park, who work together in AFLAC's Albany offices, have been training for months.

Miller first became interested in the event in mid-February after losing 30 pounds during an intra-office contest similar to NBC's "The Biggest Loser." After coming in second in the competition by only two-tenths of a pound, she set a goal to lose 10 more pounds and saw the triathlon as a means to that end.

"I've got nothing to lose but more weight," Miller said.

Miller, who describes herself as "extremely competitive," will try to finish the entire triathlon: an 800-meter swim, a 30k bike race and a 5k run. Miller has joined the YMCA, where she swims twice a week, and she has been running and biking four times a week.

Miller suffers from sleep apnea, a condition that obstructs breathing during sleep, and credits her training with improving her sleeping and eating habits and giving her more energy. Miller also attributes training to alleviating some of the negative aspects of her life, aside from physical health.

"I gained perspective," Miller said. "It was really an attitude change for me."

Monroe, a single mother of two, originally was skeptical of her ability to complete the event, but after a presentation about the Iron Girl series and its benefits, she was convinced.

"There was no way I couldn't test myself to see if I could do it," Monroe said.

Monroe, who will participate in a three-person relay team as the leg of the 10K bike race, has an unusual training regimen.

Monroe has two children, which can make it difficult to find time to train. But Monroe has trained with her children, often biking along side her 4-year-old with her 1-year-old in tow. Monroe said that her 4-year-old is particularly excited about the event because "Mommy's going to be in a race." In addition, Monroe has made time to bike 18 miles regularly at Saratoga National Park "so once I get to Syracuse, I can get to the finish line."

Although the Iron Girl triathlon is a competition, Monroe and Miller spoke glowingly about the spectacular support system among the women they have been training with and will later compete against.

"It's not about beating anyone, It's about achieving your best," Monroe said.

Both also talked about camaraderie as a motivation to continue to push themselves through the rigorous training that goes with the event itself.

As Miller put it, "It's something I always think about when I want to stop running or get out of the pool or put the brakes on the bike."

The test, a series of 10 inkblot plates created by the Swiss psychiatrist Hermann Rorschach, is now in Wikipedia! This angers some psychologists who are against the posting of the 10 original Rorschach plates online (free or not).

The New York Times lets us know that the Wikipedia entry for "Rorschach test" includes reproductions of all the ink blots (which aren't copyrighted). And watch out -- the whole thing is really dramatic and exciting.

The series is about various issues regarding blacks (African-Americans) which includes panel discussions on issues facing the black community.
